Dr Eric Reid (1922-2010) was well known in the bioanalytical community for his years of research devoted to this field.

He first began his studies in the field of chemistry, however, at the University of Aberdeen from 1939-1943, before working at the Lister Institute in London until 1946. Dr Reid completed two PhDs (one at University College London and the second at the University of Cambridge) before moving to the USA for a post doctorate at Emory University (1952-1953). Dr Reid returned to the UK in 1952 and spent 11 years working at the Chester Beatty Research Institute where his research interests began to steer more towards biochemistry, nucleic acid metabolism and subcellular biochemistry, particularly in cancer research. In 1964, he joined the Battersea College of Technology and founded the Biochemistry Unit (which would eventually become the new University of Surrey after being awarded the Royal Charter in 1966). After this department moved to the new campus in Guildford in 1971, Dr Reid was successful in securing a substantial pump-priming grant from the Wolfson Foundation to develop novel approaches in clinical bioanalysis. A few years later, he took on the role as Head of the Wolfson Bioanalytical Centre and successfully led the organisation of annual international symposia in the areas of analytical methodology and subcellular biochemistry.

Dr Reid took early retirement in 1982 and started Guildford Academic Associates (along with his wife Joan’s support and recruitment of Trustees), a charity devoted to continuing the Bioanalytical Conferences and publication of Methodological Surveys. Guildford Academic Associates endowed the ‘Guildford Bench Methodology Fund’ to the Biochemical Society, which was renamed the ‘Eric Reid Fund for Methodology’ after Dr Reid sadly passed away in April 2010.
