Portland Press is the publishing arm subsidiary of the Biochemical Society. The Portland Press Excellence in Science Award is presented annually in recognition of contributions to the development of any branch of the molecular biosciences. The award is for work carried out in the UK or Republic of Ireland and is open to candidates of any nationality.
The award was donated in 1964 by the Ciba Laboratories, Horsham (later Ciba-Geigy and then Novartis). The Novartis Medal and Prize has been renamed The Portland Press Excellence in Science Award from the 2021 round of award nominations. The last presentation of the Novartis Medal and Prize was made in 2019 to Caroline Dean (John Innes Centre).
