Portland Press is the publishing arm subsidiary of the Biochemical Society. The Portland Press Excellence in Science Award is presented annually in recognition of contributions to the development of any branch of the molecular biosciences. The award is for work carried out in the UK or Republic of Ireland and is open to candidates of any nationality. 

The recipient of the award receives: 

  • £3000 prize money 
  • A trophy 
  • The opportunity to present a lecture at a Society conference 
  • An invitation to submit an article to a Society-owned publication 

The award was donated in 1964 by the Ciba Laboratories, Horsham (later Ciba-Geigy and then Novartis).  The Novartis Medal and Prize has been renamed The Portland Press Excellence in Science Award from the 2021 round of award nominations. The last presentation of the Novartis Medal and Prize will be made in 2019 to Caroline Dean (John Innes Centre). 

The 2019 winner Caroline Dean will present her award lecture at the Biochemical Society conference ‘Transcriptions in Health and Disease’ on 20-22 November 2019 in London, UK.
