In this session, Dr Sara Holland and Dave Holt equipped attendees with foundational information regarding intellectual property (with a focus on patents) in the context of the research scientist and scientist founder.

Academics often don’t realise that the way their research will impact the world is through commercialisation and exploitation – and this in turn relies heavily on intellectual property, including having a portfolio which is appealing to investors and collaborators. Having enough knowledge of how IP works and of the key issues to spot “red flags”, whilst still at the lab bench or in the early stages of founding a company, is invaluable and can help avoid making irreparable mistakes.
