Professor Frank Sargent shares his experience as Honorary Treasurer

News, Oct 14 2024

Applications are now open for our next Honorary Treasurer and to give candidates an insight into what this position entails, we asked Professor Frank Sargent, who has been in the position for over six years, to tell us more about his time as the Honorary Treasurer.

What attracted you to the Honorary Treasurer position?

I have been a member of The Biochemical Society since I was a PhD student. At that time, I’m not sure I appreciated all the important voluntary work that went in to keeping the Society going, year-on-year. After a spell as an Editor on The Biochemical Journal I got to understand a little more about the link between the publishing side (that generates income) and the charitable side (that spends that income again in the community). I saw the Honorary Treasurer position as a chance for me to learn more about business finances, rather than anything else. There was great support there from a full-time professional finance team, and the experience and knowledge I have gained has really helped me in succeeding in leadership roles in my day-job at a university. Being a Trustee of a charity has also been an important experience that has helped me in other management and leadership roles.

What have you learnt about yourself while in the role?

I have learned that I can understand accountants, auditors and pension actuaries pretty well, with a bit of practice. I’ve also found that they are interested to listen to me too, on the rare occasions I have something to say that is! I have learned that I am much more of an introvert than other people, and that it doesn’t really matter. The Biochemical Society has a diverse and welcoming personnel.

What have you enjoyed most in the role?

There have been some big decisions made in the last 7 years or so, around partnerships with other charities; property sales; the COVID-19 emergency; and the “Plan S” open access publishing changes. The Honorary Treasurer and Finance Committee were right in the midst of these, so it was quite exciting planning and strategizing all these. Otherwise, meeting some incredibly talented and dedicated people has certainly enriched my life. Luckily, I’m not bad at remembering names!

What has been the biggest challenge?

The Honorary Treasurer sits on more than one committee, so sorting out my approach to time-management was a bit of a challenge in the beginning. Being prepared definitely helps.
