International HPV Awareness Day 2023
News, Mar 02 2023
In recognition of International HPV Awareness Day 2023 on 4 March, we're pleased to bring together relevant content from our publications and events from across the broader sector.
Professor Sheila Graham, Chair of the Biochemical Society and a leading figure in this research area, has highlighted the importance this work:
"Almost all cervical cancers, and around 50% of oropharyngeal cancers, are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). There is currently a global epidemic of HPV-associated disease, with around a 20% increase over recent years, which is particularly problematic in low and middle income countries (LMIC). The World Health Organisation has a "Global strategy towards eliminating cervical cancer as a public health problem" aiming for elimination by 2030. International HPV Awareness Day highlights the need for continued basic and applied research into this virus and its disease-causing properties. In particular, researching ways to diagnose and treat HPV-associated precancerous disease and cancers that are applicable to and affordable by LMIC is a major task for the global HPV research community."
